Design Your Dwelling Has a Winner
Posted: Thursday, September 11, 2008

The Google SketchUp and Dwell.com Design Your Dwelling contest just announced the grand prize winner:

Out of almost 150 impressive entries, North Carolina-based Drew Wilgus has emerged the victor. Wilgus’ considered design stood out for its sustainable elements, integration into the local landscape, keen material use, and striking aesthetic.

Constructed using salvaged bridge elements, the home references the nearby Golden Gate while taking advantage of green building practices. Reclaimed redwood and steel materials marry the surrounding wilderness with the built environment. A landscaped plinth dug out beneath the house provides parking and channels wind through a series of turbines, alluding to the site’s previous life as an airfield.

A recent graduate of the architecture program at UNC Charlotte and current intern at The Roberts Group + Fanning Howey, Wilgus will be receiving an all expenses paid VIP trip to Dwell on Design in Los Angeles this upcoming June. A three-dimensional model of Wilgus’ winning design will also be fabricated and gifted as part of the grand prize.

I like that solid yellow material that appears in all of the sections...Few people would dare to use yellow foam at that scale, or hide its structural role with some pasted on bump mapped(?) cladding. Tectonic clarity is for those weak crafty-bastards who still read "studies in tectonic culture". Oh...and how the hell did you get the idea for a green......roof? wtf

Way to stay constructive with the criticism, Remmy.

Typical Remmy comment. I know him well, he's such an idiot.

Using recycled materials not only functionally but also symbolically was the deft move. The reference to site history was cool. One question: will this method of wind harvesting work?

remmy, are you suggesting that green roofs have somehow achieved cliche status? let me guess, you and all your friends have had one for years?

keep drawing green roofs! perhaps someday they will be cliche and it will be wonderful.
