Toronto, Ontario (April 3, 2008) – A visionary leader in the landscape architecture industry, a dedicated and passionate green roof researcher and an entire government department are among of this year’s Green Roofs for Healthy Cities’ (GRHC) Awards of Excellence winners announced today.

  • Government of the District of Columbia: Civic Leaders Award (Government)
  • Dr. Bradley Rowe, Associate Professor, Department of Horticulture, Michigan State University (MSU): Green Roof Research

Nancy Somerville is recognized for her significant role and personal dedication to developing the green roof industry throughout North America.

The Government of the District of Columbia is recognized for advancing a number of policies and initiatives to promote green roofs in the District of Columbia and Washington area. Special recognition to the Office of Property Management, Dept. of Transportation, Dept. of Public Works and the DC Water and Sewer Authority.

Finally, Dr. Brad Rowe is honored for his outstanding contribution to both the establishment and development of leading-edge green roof research.

Winners of the seven outstanding Award of Excellence categories for residential and commercial, industrial green roof and green wall projects will be announced during the GRHC’’ annual conference, awards and trade show program in Baltimore, MD from April 30 to May 2, 2008.

“Green Roofs for Healthy Cities’ has many goals, but critical to our mission is the celebration of excellence in the emerging living architecture industry,” says Steven W. Peck, founder and president of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities in Toronto, Canada. “I couldn’t be prouder than to celebrate the achievements of these three extraordinary award winners.”

Our mission is to increase the awareness of the economic, social and environmental benefits of green roofs and green walls, and other forms of living architecture through education, advocacy, professional development and celebrations of excellence.
