Washington’s National Museum of African American History and Culture has released the six finalists that will be competing to win the commission to design the the new National Museum of African American History and Culture.

The location of the new museum, between the Washington Monument and the Capitol, is expected attract a tremendous amount of attention to the proposals. The winning team is expected to complete the project in 3 years, with a planned start date in 2012. A winner will be selected in mid-April of this year by an 11-member jury including Robert Kogod, a Smithsonian regent and president of Charles E. Smith Management; Adela Naude Santos, dean of the MIT school of architecture; Richard D. Parsons, co-chair of the African American museum’s council and former chairman of Time Warner; and two former chairmen of Fannie Mae, James A. Johnson and Franklin D. Raines.
