DESIGNCIRCUIT and REVERSE Space present Crisis as Calling, an international competition that challenges participants from all fields, including artists, architects, designers, and writers, to reconsider and respond to the universal condition of Crisis. The typical (or assumed) response to Crisis is an attempt to return to “normal,” but Crisis as Calling questions whether restoring post-crisis conditions to their pre-crisis state is truly the best course of action or whether past, current, and future crises provide callings and opportunities to build a better “normal.” Each participant or group is asked to select and define a crisis condition, real or imagined, past, present, or of a plausible future, and submit ideas for how design and the arts can constructively address this disruption. Proposals may consider alternative approaches to early prevention, concurrent action, post-crisis response or ways of mitigating future occurrences. We see this as more than an opportunity for responsive design; we see this as a call to reconsider the role of the design and arts communities in a world filled with Crisis.
Winners will receive a cash prize, a stipend for further research, exhibition at REVERSE Space, and publication. Deadline for registration and submission is October 4, 2013. For more information and to apply, visit crisisascalling.com.
