In winter 2010, The Warming Hut: An Art + Architecture Exposition changed pure function into art. Five local architects on a shoestring budget created five uniquely and functionally designed, transportable structures that offered protection from the harsh winter elements.
In 2011 the exposition successfully became an international architectural design competition, receiving attention and press from virtually every continent. The open international design competition was endorsed by the Manitoba Association of Architects and the call for submissions was made in September 2010. The jury, comprised of participants of the 2010 Warming Huts Exposition selected the three winning designs from over 130 submissions which came from virtually every corner of the globe.
The competition grew exponentially in terms of international recognition. Responding to a simple ask letter, Warming Huts v2012 welcomed one of the world's leading architects, Frank Gehry. Joining him were winning designs from teams in Czech Republic, Norway and New York with a fourth hut from student submissions at the University of Manitoba. Submissions for Warming Huts v.2013 are being accepted from June 15, 2012 - September 3, 2012.
