Beyond providing accommodation and services to athletes and officials in 2012, the Olympic Village will exist as a legacy of the Games, where architecture will genuinely contribute to the well being and enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.
This is your opportunity to contribute to the creation of a development that will become an architectural example in terms of design, planning and development that others will look to emulate in the years to come.
It is also a project which will have truly international exposure, providing visibility and provoking interest from around the globe. The development must rise to meet these expectations. This means that we are looking for submissions that display a high level of creativity and innovation, whilst retaining practical usability.
Candidates have until June 28, 2007 to enter submissions for a place on the Village Architects Panel. The list of panel members, which is expected to comprise around 40 practices, will then be announced on 31 July 2007.
Once in place, panelists will be short-listed for individual commissions.
The Village development will involve 4,200 residential dwellings and related accommodation. It sits within Stratford City – a larger development for which outline planning consent has been granted – and will complement the 1,224 residential units in the retail-led regeneration of Zone 1 being developed by Westfield.
After the London 2012 Games, the Village will form part of a much larger mixed-use community comprising homes, offices, retail, leisure, hotels and other commercial accommodation.
Lend Lease has initiated the formation of an architectural panel to design the individual elements of the Athletes Village. These will include city blocks, individual buildings and pavilions and kiosks serving the public areas. It is currently envisaged that there will be 20 – 30 individual commissions.
