Theme
Architecture Coexisting with World Heritage Sites

Brief

Currently, there are 851 World Heritage Sites. Natural heritage sites, cultural heritage sites and mixed heritage sites have been designated by UNESCO as monuments that have a universal value and should be shared by all mankind. The history within these sites tells us about our past, and by adding new sites, we help weave important moments of our history for future generations. We must not lose the historical interconnectedness that is created by these sites.

Historical heritages sites must be more that simply preserved in their current condition in order to maintain their relevance for the future:
people ought to be able to visit these heritages sites and learn from them.
Yet we must prevent the damage and environmental destruction that crowds of visitors create. The logistics of creating a world Heritages Site which both caters to a great number of visitors and which can be protected from the wear and strain on it caused by the public are central concerns in designing a plan such as this.

To achieve this aim, this year’s theme is “Architecture coexisting with World Heritage Sites.”

Applicants are free to choose any World Heritage Site, however they must make clear the reason for choosing that site. Applicants are also free to select any type of architecture to coexist with the site. There will certainly be many types of architecture, such as information booths, exhibition halls, hotels, restaurants, and viewing platforms. We would like proposals to show how the architecture will interact with the context and practical constraints of the World Heritage site.
Coexistence is not assimilation, nor is it harmony. It is two ideas coming from different premises that come together and raise the overall merit of the project by complementing each other.

I hope the competitors’ proposals will be intellectually enriching and beneficial to the meaning and significance of the World Heritage Site while at the same time present the attractiveness that can be found in contemporary architecture.

Submission Deadline

Hello,
Does anyone have any background information on this competition? I.E. Is it legitimate; is there a bias towards Japanese architects? What is the eligibility to enter or is it entirely open to archs/designers/artists ?

Cheers

Hello,

Has anyone received any updates as to the shortlisted candidates? Seems like a very brief time between submittal deadline (July 25th) and stated time to advise of 10 shortlisted teams (end of July) - specially as last year think they recevied ~ 700 entries?

Perhaps later this month?

Hi, I had exactly the same question. I read last year that they narrowed down to the shortlist on August 8th, so I expect it'll be the same time frame this year. It seems like they described a tight window of time on the website...

yes, from some fellow Japanese friends that entered last year they also confirmed that it will come in the second week.

P.S. Maybe someone would be good enough to post a note here if they find out if the shortlist has been announced ?

Any non-shortlisted entrants care to share their entries with URL links?

Hello All:

Not to make unfounded accusations, but there is a small question in my mind as to the fairness or apparent bias in this competition, being that last year, 7 of the shortlisted entrants were Japanese (the 8th was Korean); this year, 9 of the entrants appear to be Japanese (please correct me if I'm wrong). Their web site doesn't offer a complete archive at all of previous year's results except going back 1 year.

This is good opportunity each year in that this competition is open, there is no fee, and its premise offers a wide degree of design freedom.

However, if indeed it is meant to be internationally open, then out of 733 entrants, presumably with many from the US, Canada, and Europe, why is there an apparent exclusivity to the sponsor's home country?

Given that descriptive text appears on the competition board, then the selection committee can't claim a totally anonymous selection process - any entry not written entirely in Japanese is marked.

Would the sponsor care to reveal what the breakdown of the entrant's home countries is from this year's group of applications? Were 90% of the entries, 660 out of 733, from Japan ?! Do enough entrants who may be reading this care to group together and see if the sponsor wishes to address this ?

Again, although this competition has no fee to enter, everyone who entered presumably put a fair degree of earnest time and money into the process nonetheless - I think it's reasonable to be given some indication as to the integrity of the process that was entered in good faith.

Best,
Phil E.

here is the link. the competition is really based on graphic sensibilities....so I believe that cultural biases are normal.

cheer up,

Hi -

Well, at the least, awesome link - thanks very much. Also interesting purely from a design-history point of view.

Yes, cheered up and onto the next thing (although the list ...ahem...maybe tends to prove my point ?).

Cheers -

P E
