ABOUT
The 2008 Design NSW: Travelling Scholarship will assist a NSW designer at the beginning of their career to undertake a program of professional development overseas. The recipient of the award will be announced during Sydney Design 08 at the Powerhouse Museum and featured in the festival program and on dhub.org. Next follows a journey of professional development in the UK where the British Council will facilitate introductions to up to eight leading practitioners relevant to the winner’s field. The scholarship money can also be used for additional, approved, professional development activities.
The scholarship is offered by the New South Wales Government in partnership with the Powerhouse Museum and the British Council.
WHO CAN ENTER
Applicants should be within the first five years of their professional practice as a designer. (Professional practice, for the purpose of this scholarship is generally understood to be the completion of an undergraduate degree.) The scholarship is open to designers working in the broad areas of product and communication design (including for the home, industry and the body). The scholarship is not intended for established designers or designers of the built environment.
THE SCHOLARSHIP
The Design NSW: Travelling Scholarship winner will receive:
* $18,000 as financial support for a program of professional development overseas.
* The professional development will include, but is not limited to, a period of time in the UK meeting with leading British designers through the British Council’s extensive network.
* Announcement during Sydney Design 08, inclusion in the festival program and a feature on the online resource dhub.org
JUDGING
A judging committee comprised of industry leaders will make its decision on the basis of ability, potential and suitability of the proposed program of study/professional development. Designs will be assessed on the following criteria:
* Authenticity and innovation
* Practicality and performance
* Ecolological impact and social responsibility
* Potential market
Shortlisted applicants will be required to be available for an interview with the judging committee in July 2008. The judges’ decision is final; no correspondence will be entered into regarding the judges’ decision.
