Harbor Fine Arts Gallery 1111 Figueroa Place Wilmington, CA 90744 Coy Howard From Hand to Mouse / From Furniture to Architecture March 27 to May 7, 2010 Opening Reception Saturday, March 27, 4 PM to 7 PM Los Angeles Harbor College Fine Arts Gallery is pleased to present From Hand to Mouse / From Furniture to Architecture, an exhibition that blurs the boundaries between furniture and architecture, and explores the potential of the visceral acting in concert with the cerebral. It is about seeing and the resultant sense of wonder. Architect CoyHoward presents a selection of thirty images of three speculative architectural projects and a collection of furniture designs revealing a rare formal inventiveness. While each image seduces one to relish the moment of seeing, the prior act of moving a sheer curtain behind which the images are mounted, creates an essential intimacy. Long an apostle of opposites and mystery, Howard projects images of a new and innovative architecture. Present in these images is the anticipation, similar to the moment when the orchestra is tuning up before a performance, of a built future made rich with new materials and technologies, yet full of deep memories and poignant desires. In speaking of Coy Howard, Pritzker Prize Winner Thom Mayne said, "Without a doubt,Coy Howard is one of the unsung heroes of American architecture. His influence on my work was substantial and of critical importance to my development." Equally impressed, architectural critic Jeffrey Kipnis has noted, "His teaching on the poetry of materials, and material assemblies, and his conviction in architecture's power to make our experiences of life not only more authentic but more vibrant, have quietly shaped a generation of students". Coy Howard is a designer with a broad spectrum of interests and accomplishments. His furniture has been accepted for inclusion into the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Denver Museum of Art. Examples of his graphic designs are held in several international museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He has won a broad range of awards for his work, and consulted as an advisor to many major institutions, including The Getty Center, The Israel Museum in Jerusalem, and The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Additionally, he has directed the undergraduate programs at The Southern California Institute of Architecture and The Environmental Arts at Otis College of Art and Design. He is currently a Professor at The Southern California Institute of Architecture. Curated by Ron Linden, From Hand to Mouse / From Furniture to Architecture runs through May 7. Gallery hours are Monday - Thursday, 11 AM - 4 PM, and by appointment. For visuals or additional information, please call 310-600-4873.
