Four projects explore the nature of being heard and the potential for freedom of speech and expression in our cities. What constitutes ‘speech’? The igniting and extinguishing of a Star of David made of twigs in a square in Barcelona? The putrid realisation of religious symbols? A sunbathing nude in a sweltering car park? Or a little girl’s pursuit of tactile communication? Like Demosthenes, the famous orator of ancient Athens, who overcame his speech impediments by shouting out over the Mediterranean with a mouthful of pebbles, we must strive for elocution, we must work on our dictions, our voices and our gestures. These projects in each case, serve to posit and demonstrate a ‘speech act’ and propose that speech should be fearless! StudioJonandNina is proud to invite you to the opening night of our exhibition, FREEDOM OF SPEECH IN THE CITY, on Friday the 5th of June, 8pm at Plantazero in Barrio Gotico (address on attached invitation). In keeping with our theme of freedom of speech, we will distribute copious amounts of post-its (and Cava!) for you to express yourselves - so come and have your say! We look forward to seeing you there...
