Los Angeles, CA - 'Light Frames', an installation by Los Angeles architect Gail Peter Borden, opens Saturday, October 16th at Materials & Applications (M&A) from 4-6pm. This event, which will attract architecture and design enthusiasts from all over Southern California, is free and open to all. 'Light Frames' will remain open daily until mid-March 2011, from 10am-10pm. 'Light Frames' will transform the exhibition space with two intersecting towering structures. The first is a hand-assembled dual layered dome, made of aluminum EMT (standard electrical conduit) that looms high over the entrance to the courtyard with a jagged delicacy that is already stopping traffic. The second structure is an inflatable vinyl 'chapel' that explores the architectural tropes used for centuries by cathedral builders to provide not only a place for reflection and repose, but also a feeling of exaltation based on spatial effects such as vaulting. ‘Light Frames’, as its name implies, is created using lightweight component-based structural frames that combine to create complex geometric forms that capture and reframe light. Borden makes a conscientious effort to emphasize the method of fabrication by truthfully exposing joints and materials. The resulted layering of systems produces an ephemeral array of light effects as the sun transitions through the courtyard during the day. For more information please visit www.emanate.org
