"New Trends in Architecture" organizes symposia and exhibitions that introduce the work of young artists who will lead the future of the field in Europe and Japan, through the integrated perspective of architecture. It deepens dialogue and facilitates exchange between different regions and cultures, aiming to create networks among practitioners. It was started in 2001 at the request of the EU Commissioner for Cultural Information in Japan. This project, conceived out of "10 Years of Japan-Europe Cooperation," soon expanded to encompass the Asia-Pacific region as well, and has since been held in 17 cities. Past commissioners have included illustrious architects such as Fumihiko Maki, Toyo Ito, Hiroshi Hara, Alvaro Siza, Alejandro Zaera Polo, Dominique Perrault, Winy Maas, Riken Yamamoto and so on, and the project is linked to 16 architectural groups from Japan.
