According to some measurements, Seoul, within the city boundaries, is the densest city in the world. The majority of the buildings that make up this enormous metropolis, and its surrounding territory have been built in the last three to four decades. It is a city, a metropolis, a conurbation, a territory, and emerging, yet configured, urban landscape that is continuously engulfing the entire population of the South Korean peninsula.
This exhibition features the work of six architects, including Chung Guyon, Joh Sung-yong, Kim Young-joon, Min Hyun-sik, Seung H-sang, and Yi Jong-Ho, that are intellectually and politically part of the generation raised under the dictatorships that followed the Korean war of the 1950s. The connections between the large-scale city and the individual work of architecture, focusing on the value of research, experimentation, and political engagement will be presented.
