The Designs of the Year Award always presents a flurry of memorable projects, from Zaha Hadid's Heydar Aliyev Center to human organs-on-chips to an ad campaign promoting the beauty of imperfect fruits and veggies — among hundreds of worthy nominees. Established by London's Design Museum, the slightly renamed Beazley Designs of the Year Award celebrates the most innovative global design in Architecture, Digital, Fashion, Graphic, Product and Transport from the last 12 months.
Back for its ninth installment, this year's shortlist has more than 70 fascinating nominated designs. The Architecture category features Bjarke Ingels' Via 57 West ‘courtscraper’ in New York, MAD Architects’ stunning Harbin Opera House, Herzog & de Meuron's Tate Modern Switch House, and the well-known Prada Foundation in Milan by Rem Koolhaas/OMA, among others. Some nominees in the other categories include a drinkable book, the redesigned Norwegian passport, MUJI kitchen appliance, and the last album cover of the late David Bowie.
Category winners will be announced and then one overall winner will be crowned the Beazley Designs of the Year awardee on January 26, 2017. Don't forget that the Design Museum will host the yearly nominees exhibition starting November 24 through February 19, 2017.
