Planning ahead for another busy week in Los Angeles? Bustler put together a snappy list of architecture and design events happening around town. This week's picks include: an AIA|LA discussion about the 2028 Olympics; the upcoming “Above and Behind: The Architecture Photography of Benny Chan” exhibition at WUHO Gallery; “Rooftops & Backyards: Expanding Taipei & LA” curated by Jimenez Lai; and the new “Beyond the Streets” graffiti and street art exhibition at Werkartz. Read on for our latest weekly event recommendations.
This AIA|LA discussion will revolve around questions like: How do we ensure greater business inclusion and cultural diversity as it relates to procurement, project delivery and the professional service providers that will prepare Los Angeles for the 2028 Olympics?
Curated by Jimenez Lai, the exhibition features creative urban models, short films, and drawings of Taipei and Los Angeles that explore the issue of limited space in densely populated urban areas, and how the subject is dealt with differently in Taiwan and America. Panelists include Elizabeth Timme of LA-Más and Taiwanese architect Ching-yue Roan.
See art and commercial photographer Benny Chan's most recent photo series of iconic and vernacular Los Angeles architecture under construction. These documents peel back the familiar finish of the city and reveal its guts. They give Los Angeles the opportunity to see what it’s made of. Chan will also be presented with the 2018 Julius Shulman Institute Excellence in Photography Award.
Beyond The Streets is a multimedia showcase of paintings, sculpture, photography, installations and more throughout 40,000+ sq. ft. of industrial indoor and outdoor space. Curated by Roger Gastman, the co-producer of the Banksy documentary “Exit Through the Gift Shop”, find original works by the likes of Shepard Fairey, Guerrilla Girls, Jenny Holzer, Takashi Murakami, Gordon Matta-Clark, and many more.
