The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Beautifying Transportation Infrastructure Challenge invites participants to develop visual and conceptual proposals that reimagine transportation infrastructure as both functional public works and meaningful civic landmarks. The competition is looking for ideas that integrate beauty, public experience, regional character, and American architectural heritage into infrastructure such as bridges and overpasses, transit and mobility hubs, corridors and streetscapes, gateways and entries, plazas and transportation-connected public spaces, rural transportation features, and intermodal connections.
Framed as a national design challenge rather than a construction funding opportunity, the program aims to build a collection of exemplary renderings that can help inform future U.S. DOT planning, policy, and outreach. Organized around Professional, Public, and Student tiers, the challenge encourages a wide range of participants to propose concepts that elevate the perception of infrastructure, strengthen community identity, and demonstrate how transportation design can become more memorable, welcoming, and enduring.
