In recognition of Los Angeles’ challenging geography, AIA|LA has
decided to investigate a mobile center that will travel to the many
cities and neighborhoods that comprise our city sprawl as an
architectural outreach to LA’s communities.
"In a metropolis such as ours, comprised of many unique communities, neighborhoods, and public meeting spots, we believe it’s important to bring the AIA|LA and the work of our members directly to Angelenos where they live and experience the city," noted AIA|LA Executive Director Carlo Caccavale, Hon. AIA|LA. "One of the many important reasons we’ve conceived a mobile center is: it’s a means to directly reach elementary, middle and high school students who aren’t exposed to architecture."
The mobile center will be a multi-faceted project that serves a highly
adaptive and flexible program of office, exhibition/gallery space,
classroom, creative hub, gathering point, etc. Creative and economic use
of space, financial management, and opportunities to engage the
communities with an enticing and functional design will be paramount
challenges.
The Chapter and its Board of Directors invite California architecture
and design school students to submit concepts for a Mobile Center for
Architecture and Design. Student proposals shall be overseen by
faculty/staff to help control quality and feasibility of submission.
While not required, AIA|LA encourages the schools to develop a dedicated
studio or charrette for the competition.
Qualified entries will receive financial prizes and have their design
exhibited in conjunction with the 2018 annual 2x8 student exhibition.
More so, the competition is an opportunity for students to see a
meaningful project realized and seen throughout the city.
