Open Call: Counter-territories, an international urban and art competition and digital workshop

Tajarrod Architecture and Art Foundation invites you to participate in our new project: (Counter-territories).

(Counter-territories) is an international urban and art competition and project with a research orientation to encourage local architects, artists, researchers and creative practitioners to work and network with international architects and professionals, to re-read and critically understand the current planning and geographic situation of our cities and territories by focusing on its social and cultural contexts, by using (counter-mapping) methodologies to re-documenting and re-drawing cultural and socio-spatial phenomena that are usually not visible in official maps, including the suspended, excluded and silenced phenomena, the dynamics of minorities use of space, the phenomena of placelessness, unhomeliness  and loss of identity, hidden layers ... etc., as an inevitable and essential constituent of the city, In order to develop an in-depth understanding of human’s current relationship with the environment around him in highly volatile and changing contexts. Hence the importance of redrawing and formulating our expressive maps as a counter strategy to recognize what is not recognized in the current cultural discourse and to raise awareness of its inevitable existence.

Who can apply?

Architects, artists, researchers, and writers of any nationality and any creative or research-related major, whether students, graduates, or independents.

Background:

Throughout history, we have known that crisis have been an inevitable event that visits our cities every now and then to impose all sorts of existential threats: wars, pandemics, colonization, natural disasters, economic breakdowns…etc. And yet in parallel there were also many sorts of human adaptations and survival modes taken in, some were generated within the fabric of the city struggling within and against the urban life, and others were seeking divergence or refuge in other foreign territories, away from a local land, local identity, and belonging, to find an-Other land, and an-other home, in an uncertain flow of placelessness, through diverse lands, cities and rough topographies, through the deserts, the forests and across the seas,  where they can find refuge in new lands and new communities that may absorb their hardship and difference. And based on this turbulent reality, we will begin our investigation journey by first asking:

How can we redefine the role of  local architects on a larger and more effective scale? Architect as artist, architect as social analyst and critic, architect as anthropologist?.

How and where can we redefine the counter-territory at the present time, across Libya and beyond? What is the role of geographical and urban borders in forming and controlling social masses and the reactions of these social masses.

How can we express the existence of the counter-territory collectively and individually? What are the possible technical and artistic means to formulate an expressive countermap?

Project phases:

1^st phase: a digital workshop:

In the first phase, Tajarrod Foundation will organize, through its platform (Unit X), a one-week introductory digital workshop for a limited number of participants who applied through the open call and got accepted. The workshop will consist of short lectures, assignments and discussions on the concept of the project, its objectives and expected results. It will provide the basics of the methodologies to be adopted during the production of research and technical work. Presentations and guidance will be provided by a local and international board of specialists and researchers.

2^nd  phase: competition period and studio work:

25/11/2020

Immediately after the completion of the workshop, the Unit X Supervisory board will nominate from 7 to 15 participants who will be prepared to be given a period of 36 days to conduct research and produce their countermaps for any geographical location of their choice, whether inside or outside Libya. This period will also consist of a midterm review to follow up on the participant’s research and creative process, and a final review where they submit their final work to be evaluated. In parallel, the Unit X team will also work collectively to research and produce countermaps for the Libyan context specifically.

After receiving the final work from the participants, the Unit X jury will review and evaluate their submissions and inform them of the results and comments, and then a digital meeting will be held that brings together the participants and Unit X's supervisory and review team to reflect and discuss the results of the work and the experience in general.

3^rd phase: output and rewards:

1/1/2021

Last but not least, 3 winners will be honored and rewarded with symbolic financial grants of $ 300 and will be invited to continue and join the online research team in Unit X to work collaboratively on the fourth stage of the project, which is the in-depth design research that the unit will undertake on the architectural potentials of countermaps, at the beginning of 2021.

Additionally the best 7 entries of the participants will be published in the project publication (brochure or magazine) and some global sites such as Archdaily and others, and will be given an honorable mention.

Finally an exhibition will be organized that includes all the work of the participants.

Eligibility:

• Applicants should have similar interests to the subject of the project and have any previous related work (drawings, artworks, site analysis maps, research texts, etc.)
• Good English for understanding, communicating, and writing.
• Can contribute at least 4 hours a week for this project.

تدعوكم مؤسسة تجرُّد للعمارة والفنون بالمشاركة في مشروعنا الجديد: أراضي مضادة

(أراضي مضادة) هو مسابقة فنية وحضرية  دولية ومشروع تشاركي بمنطلق بحثي لتشجيع المعماريين والفنانين والبحاث والممارسين الابداعيين المحليين على العمل والتشبيك مع معماريين ومهنيين دوليين،  لإعادة القراءة والفهم النقدي للوضع التخطيطي والجغرافي الراهن في مدننا واراضينا  بالتركيز على سياقاته الاجتماعية والثقافية ،  عن طريق استخدام منهجيات (الخرائط المضادة) لاعادة توثيق وترسيم الظواهر الثقافية والاجتماعية الفراغية غير المرئية عادة في الخرائط الرسمية، ومنها الظواهر المعلقة والمستبعدة والمكتومة وديناميات الاقليات في توظيف الفراغ، ظواهر  اللامكان، اللاهوية والانفصال.. الخ, باعتبارها مكونات حتمية وأساسية في تشكيل واقع مدننا واراضينا ولها الحق الكامل في الظهور على خرائطنا، من اجل تطوير فهم معمق لعلاقة الانسان الحالية بالبيئة من حوله في الاوضاع شديدة التقلب والتغيير . ومن هنا تأتي أهمية إعادة رسم وصياغة خرائطنا المعبرة كاستراتيجية مضادة للاعتراف بما لا يتم الاعتراف به  في الخطاب الثقافي الراهن والتوعية بوجوده الحتمي.

من يمكنه التقديم:

المعماريين والفنانين والبحاث والكتاب من اي جنسية واي تخصص ابداعي او بحثي ذو علاقة, سواء الطلبة اوالخريجين او المستقلين.

عبر التاريخ ، عرفنا أن الأزمة حدثًا لا مفر منه يزور مدننا بين الحين والآخر لفرض شتى أنواع التهديدات الوجودية عبر الحروب والأوبئة والاستعمار والكوارث الطبيعية و الاقتصادية ... إلخ. ومع ذلك، نجد هنالك أيضًا العديد من أنواع التكيفات البشرية وأنماط البقاء التي تم تبنيها ، بعضها نشأ داخل نسيج المدينة الذي يكافح داخل الحياة الحضرية وضدها ، و البعض الآخر يبحث عن الانجراف أو الملجأ في مناطق مغايرة أخرى ، بعيدًا عن الأرض المحلية والهوية والانتماء، نحو أرض أخرى ، ومأوى آخر ، في تدفق مستمر من عدم الاستقرار والاضطراب ، عبر ضجة المدن  ودهاليز الاحياء الفقيرة والاراضي والتضاريس المتنوعة ، عبر الصحاري والغابات وعبر البحار ، حيث يمكنهم أن يجدو ملاذًا في أراضي جديدة ومجتمعات جديدة قد تستوعب معاناتهم واختلافهم.

وانطلاقا من هذا الواقع المضطرب سنبدأ رحلتنا الاستقصائية بالتساؤل اولا:

•  كيف يمكننا اعادة تعريف دور المعماري المحلي على نطاق اوسع واكثر فاعلية؟ المعماري كفنان، المعماري كمحلل وناقد اجتماعي، المعماري كعالم انثروبولوجيا؟.
•  كيف وأين يمكننا إعادة تحديد الارض المضادة في الوقت الحاضر عبر ليبيا وماوراءها؟ ماهو دور الحدود الجغرافية والمدنية في تشكيل الانساق الاجتماعية والتحكم بها وردود فعل هذه الانساق الاجتماعية.
• كيف يمكننا التعبير عن وجود الارض المضادة بشكل جماعي وفردي؟ وماهي الوسائل الفنية الممكنة لصياغة الخريطة المضادة المعبرة؟
• على المتقدمين للمشاركة ان يملكو اهتمامات مشابهة لموضوع المشروع ولديهم اي اعمال سابقة ذات صلة (رسومات، اعمال فنية، خرائط تحليل موقع، نصوص بحثية..الخ)
• لغة انجليزية جيدة للفهم والتواصل والكتابة.
• تفرغ على الاقل 4 ساعات اسبوعيا.
• يُتوقع من المتقدمين بعد قبولهم في المرحلة الثانية تسليم من 3 الى 6 خرائط في نهاية فترة المسابقة باستخدام اي وسيلة فنية (فوتوشوب، رسم يد، اوتوكاد، كولاج..الخ)، بحجم A1  لكل خريطة
• تسليم 250-500 نص بحثي

مراحل المشروع:

المرحلة الاولى: ورشة عمل رقمية:

في المرحلة الأولى ، ستنظم مؤسسة تجرُّد عبر منصتها (الوحدة إكس) ورشة عمل رقمية تمهيدية لمدة أسبوع لعدد محدود ضمن المشاركين الذين تقدموا بالطلبات من خلال الدعوة العامة وحصلوا على قبول. ستتألف ورشة العمل من محاضرات قصيرة ومهامات ومناقشات حول مفهوم المشروع وأهدافه والنتائج المتوقعة، وستوفر أساسيات المنهجيات المطلوب تبنيها خلال انتاج البحوث والاعمال الفنية. سيتم تقديم المحاظرات والارشادات من قبل لجنة محلية ودولية من المتخصصين والبحاث.

المرحلة الثانية: فترة المسابقة والعمل:

25/11/2020

مباشرة بعد اتمام ورشة العمل ، سترشح لجنة الوحدة إكس الاشرافية من  7 الى15 مشاركين الذين سيكونون مستعدين ليتم منحهم مدة 36 يومًا لإجراء البحوث وإنتاج خرائطهم المضادة لأي موقع جغرافي يختارونه سواء داخل ليبيا او خارجها. ستتألف هذه الفترة أيضًا من مراجعة نصفية لمتابعة عمليتهم البحثية والابداعية ، ومراجعة نهائية حيث يقدمون أعمالهم النهاية ليتم تقييمها. بالتوازي ، سيعمل فريق الوحدة إكس أيضًا بشكل جماعي على البحث وإنتاج خرائط مضادة للسياق الليبي بالخصوص.

بعد استلام الاعمال النهائية من المشاركين ستقوم لجنة تحكيم الوحدة إكس بمراجعة تسليماتهم وتقييمها وافادتهم بالنتائج والتعليقات، ومن ثم سيعقد اجتماع رقمي يجمع المشاركين وفريق الوحدة إكس الاشرافي والتحكيمي للتفكر والنقاش حول نتائج العمل والتجربة بصفة عامة.

المرحلة الثالثة: النتاج والمكافآت:

أخيرا وليس آخِرا سيتم تكريم و مكافئة 3 فائزين بمنح مالية رمزية بقيمة 300$  ودعوتهم للاستمرار والانضمام للفريق البحثي اونلاين في الوحدة إكس للعمل تشاركيا على المرحلة الرابعة من المشروع وهي البحث التصميمي المعمق الذي ستخوضه الوحدة حول الامكانات المعمارية للخرائط المضادة، في بداية سنة 2021.

سيتم نشر افضل 7 اعمال للمشاركين في منشور المشروع (كتيب او مجلة) وبعض المواقع العالمية مثل  Archdaily وغيره وتكريمهم بمرتبة الشرف. بالاضافة الى تنسيق معرض فني يضم جميع أعمال المشاركين.
