1. Project Background

Shenzhen Natural History Museum is one of the "Ten Cultural Facilities of the New Era" in Shenzhen. It is located in Yanziling Area, Pingshan District, Shenzhen. Shenzhen Natural History Museum is positioned as a large-scale comprehensive natural museum, aiming to be "the leading in China and the first-class in the world". It covers four basic functions including collection, exhibition, research and natural science education.

This project is a large-scale public facility funded by Shenzhen Municipal People's Government. The tenderee is the Engineering Design Management Center of Bureau of Public Works of Shenzhen Municipality. The tender is now open to exhibition design teams all around the world for pre-qualification applications.

2. Project Overview

Shenzhen Natural History Museum covers a site area of about 42000 square meters, with a gross floor area of about 105300 square meters. The project consists of six functional departments, including the exhibition area, collection storage and conservation area, public service area, science education area, administration and academic research area, as well as underground parking lot and equipment rooms. The total investment is RMB 511.53 million. The total floor area of the exhibition area is about 43000 square meters, among which the major exhibition area is about 35000 square meters and the science education auxiliary exhibition area is about 8000 square meters.

The in-depth research for the permanent exhibition halls of the Shenzhen Natural History Museum is based on four thematic sections: "Natural Evolution", "Ecosystem and Biodiversity", "Harmony between Human and Nature", and "Natural Mysteries and Wisdom". According to the preliminary exhibition planning, the exhibition theme of the Shenzhen Natural History Museum is "Connecting People to Nature". The museum will construct its scientific content system from three dimensions: "Natural Evolution", "Self-knowledge" as well as "Resources and Environment". The exhibition space is divided into 4 primary areas: major exhibition area (including permanent exhibition halls and temporary exhibition halls), auxiliary exhibition area in public space, scientific education auxiliary exhibition area, as well as outdoor exhibition and recreation area. The major exhibition area consists of permanent exhibition halls with the following themes: universe, earth, evolution, dinosaurs, human beings, biology, ecology, homeland, etc. The major exhibition area also includes 2 temporary exhibition halls.

The tender for the exhibition design and related services of the project is divided into 2 tender lots.

The pre-qualification phase of this tender values applicants' company strength and project experience, as well as the strength and project experience of the proposed teams. The review will also be based on the concept proposals submitted by the applicants, aiming to select worldwide design companies with comprehensive strength in museum exhibition design, as well as design companies with practical experience and profound insight on the exhibition design of natural history, natural science and other relevant museums, so as to not only demonstrate excellent creativity, but also ensure the implementation of the project.

Applicants are welcome to bid according to the relevant requirements in the Pre-qualification Document.


3. Tender Content

The total floor area of the exhibition area in Tender Lot I is about 23344.78 square meters. Tender Lot I includes the exhibition design and related services of the permanent exhibition halls (B2), science education auxiliary exhibition areas (L1 science education lobby, L4), the auxiliary exhibition areas in public spaces (which refers to the indoor and outdoor areas that could be used for exhibition outside the halls), supporting rooms, as well as digital virtual exhibits and other areas that can be used for exhibition.

The total floor area of the exhibition area in Tender Lot II is about 20134.68 square meters. Tender Lot II includes the exhibition design and related services of the permanent exhibition halls (L1, L2), temporary exhibition halls, science education auxiliary exhibition area (L1 public service area), the auxiliary exhibition areas in public spaces (which refers to the indoor and outdoor areas that could be used for exhibition outside the halls), supporting rooms, digital virtual exhibits, indoor and outdoor signature exhibits, and other areas that can be used for exhibition.

The final work content shall be subject to the Tender Document and the design contract.

4. Tender Procedure

The tender adopts the method of "open call", which includes the pre-qualification phase, design competition phase, and final evaluation phase. Please refer to the Pre-qualification Document for details.


5. Application Requirements

1. The applicant must be a registered independent legal entity or other organization;

2. The applicant must have the Class-A Qualification Certificate for Building Decoration Engineering Design or higher qualification;

3. A consortium applicant (hereinafter referred to as consortium) is allowed to bid, and the consortium should meet the following requirements:

1) One consortium shall include no more than 3 members (including the leading member);

2) The leading member of the consortium must be a domestic registered independent entity or other organization;

3) Each member of the consortium shall not bid in the same tender lot alone or participate in another consortium to bid in the same tender lot;

4) All members of the consortium shall sign a legal Consortium Agreement, clarifying the division of workload and equity share of the leading member and the others. 

4. Individuals or teams of individuals are not accepted.


6. Tender Fee

The estimated tender price for Tender Lot I is RMB 14.92 million (including the compensation), and the estimated tender price for Tender Lot II is RMB 16.14 million (including the compensation). Please refer to the Pre-qualification Document for details.
