Quarry Regenerative Landscaping Design

REIMAGINING ABANDONED QUARRIES

Quarry Regenerative Landscaping Design

SIGN UP HERE

Left derelict, a once thriving quarry causes severe environmental degradation. Your challenge is to transform this degraded site into a sustainable and ecologically rich space.

This brief asks for a detailed landscape proposal for the revitalisation of a disused quarry of your choosing. Often referred to as a scar on the natural landscape, the objective is to reimagine this harsh and lifeless environment, reintroducing the native flora and fauna of the post industrial works and restoring important habitats and ecosystems disrupted due to the quarrying process.

If you are taking part in our other Quarry competitions, your proposals can be combined to create one large proposal.

The winning design will transform the abandoned quarry into a captivating and versatile public space, serving as a testament to architectural excellence and environmental protection.

Proposals should include plans for re-vegetation, habitat creation, and the reintroduction of indigenous flora and fauna. The design should seamlessly integrate the restored site with its natural surroundings.

Consider how to make the site visually appealing while respecting the beauty and unique features of the local landscape and maintaining the dramatic characteristics of the quarry.

Sustainability is a key factor. Incorporate sustainable and environmentally friendly design principles, materials, and construction methods to minimise the project's ecological footprint.

The restored quarry should offer educational opportunities for the public. Include plans for interpretive signage, walking trails, and other features that allow visitors to learn about the site's history and ecology.

Provide a detailed design proposal that includes conceptual drawings, plans, and renderings. Explain how your design addresses the objectives outlined above.

Outline your strategy for ecosystem restoration, habitat creation, and native species reintroduction. Include a timeline for achieving ecological restoration milestones.

Describe how your design incorporates sustainable practices, materials, and technologies. Highlight any innovative approaches to sustainability. Detail how your design will engage and educate the public and consider visitor amenities and community involvement.
