‘Transforming Falcon Road Bridge’ Design Competition

Register/Submit Deadline:  Thursday, Sep 12, 202412 PMBST

The London Festival of Architecture and Wandsworth Council have launched an Open Call to revitalise Falcon Road Bridge and the route running beneath, turning it into a vibrant, artistic space.

This competition invites architects, designers, and artists to submit their innovative proposals to reimagine the 100-metre-long tunnel beneath Falcon Road Bridge, enhancing the public realm and improving the overall experience for the local community. Participants are challenged to create large-scale artistic interventions that address environmental challenges while celebrating local character and heritage.

The road under Falcon Road Bridge is a critical route connecting Battersea and the river to Balham and Tooting to the south, running under Clapham Junction Station—one of London’s busiest transport hubs. Despite its significance, the bridge currently serves as an unwelcoming and disjointed space within the community. The project aims to create a pleasant and joyful environment for all users, enhance safety and accessibility, develop a visually striking intervention that reflects local diversity, and promote sustainable travel in the area.

Design proposals can encompass various elements such as re-cladding, lighting, public art, wayfinding, greening, and footpath treatments, with practical considerations including durability, sustainability, and ease of maintenance. Community engagement is vital for the project’s success, requiring design teams to consult with local community groups, especially those from the neighbouring Winstanley and York Road estates, to ensure inclusivity and responsiveness to local needs. Additionally, designs must be practical and feasible within budget constraints, capable of withstanding all weather conditions, and serve the community well into the future.

The judging panel will shortlist up to six teams, and awarded an honorarium of £1,500 + VAT to develop their design proposals. Shortlisted entries will be displayed in early November, allowing the local community to participate in a public vote. The winning team will be confirmed in December 2024, with the final design to be installed by the end of September 2025.

If you’re interested in entering the competition, you can attend an online drop-in session on 14 August 12.30pm – 1.30pm for a Q&A, and you can register here to attend.

Interested applicants are invited to submit their expressions of interest by Thursday 12 September, 12pm.
