International Architectural Competition FOR RECONSTRUCTION, IMPROVEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT urban environment in the area around the Market Square of Stara Zagora, Bulgaria

Municipality Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, invited creative people to participate in international architectural competition for the RECONSTRUCTION, IMPROVEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT OF the urban environment of "Pazarska" str. and the square space between "Tsar Simeon Veliki" str.   "Russki" Blvd., and "Kolyo Ganchev" str., Stara Zagora, Bulgaria.

Compliance with global best practices in architectural competitions and professional ethics is guaranteed.

First Prize - 10000 EUR
Second Prize - 5 000 EUR
Third Prize – 2 500 EUR

05.08.2024    Official launch of the Competition
05.08-15.11.2024    Time for preparation of the overall concept and development of the project
05.11.2024    Deadline for questions
15.11. 2024    Deadline for submission of the competition projects
16-20.11.2024    Preparation for the judging of the competition materials
21-25.11.2024    Jurying and announcement of competition results

The competition projects will be evaluated by a panel of 9 international jury members.
The final list of jury members will be announced closer soon.

Competition area

The competition area is enclosed between the two city parks and is in the heart of the city. An important characteristic of the area is the close proximity to the main pedestrian street of the city.

The general framework of the tasks set is flexible and deliberately does not set specific functional, spatial and development requirements beyond those required by the Masterplan, in order to enable participants to present and justify proposed solutions within the framework of the stated aims and objectives.

The territorial scope of the competition includes three naturally distinct areas.

Zone one includes the Central department store and the area behind it, incorporating underground parking on two levels and a plaza space.

The main defining feature of the zone is the building of the Eski Mosque, an immovable cultural property of national importance, converted into a Museum of Religions and operational since 2011.

A second zone is formed between “Tsar Ivan Shishman” str. and “Petar Parchevich” str. is crossed by “Pazarska” str. and with definite commercial functions of the objects facing the street.

The area is saturated with a variety of buildings with different uses.

The third zone is dominated by the Market.

This area of the competition area is extremely active, being saturated with commercial space, relocatables, offices and restaurants. 

The many cafes and food courts that have tables and seating on the street during the summer months.

In the vicinity of the competition area, as well as in the area itself, are located many of the buildings of the administration, cultural, educational and public services of the city of Stara Zagora.
