Bienal Miami+Beach 2009 Open International Competition, Barranquilla, Colombia

Registration Deadline:  Saturday, Oct 24, 20096:55 AMEDT

Submission Deadline:  Saturday, Oct 31, 20096:55 AMEDT

Created in 1905, the Department of the Atlantic is one of the 32 departments that politically divide the Republic of Colombia. Located on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, and delimited by the Magdalena river on the west and on the north by Caribbean Sea, its capital is the City of Barranquilla, constitutionally designated as a Special Industrial and Port District in 1933.
The city is an important commercial, industrial and university center in the Caribbean Region, and serves as a principle point of entry to Colombia. Pioneer in the cultural advancement of aviation, radio, telephony and sports, Barranquilla also hosts the Carnaval of Barranquilla, declared Oral and Immaterial Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2003.

The Caribbean Region, and each of its territories and localities, holds its own identity, both individual and collective in nature. Sensual qualities abound in the appearance of its people, the sounds of their musical notes, the aromas of their cuisine and the panoply of colors covering its landscapes. The constant relationship of artistic and spatial creations with the region’s surreal tropical world projects a unique character deeply conformed by it its mestizo heritage, its dynamic and colorful surroundings, and devotion to organic and vernacular materials.

Organized by the Government of the Atlantic Department, and the School of Architecture, Art and Design and the Architecture program at the Autonomous University of the Caribbean, the National Convocation for the Design of the Entrance to Barranquilla hopes to draw a wide range of creative projects in the areas of Urbanism, Sculpting and Spatiality.
