109th John Stewardson Memorial Competition in Architecture 2010

ANNOUNCEMENT:
The Managing Committee of the John Stewardson Memorial Scholarship in Architecture announces the competition for a $10,000 traveling scholarship.  The Committee will issue a design program and select a Jury of Award.  The winner will pursue the study of architecture in a foreign country[s] as approved by the Committee and is required to begin within one year of the award.  If the winner is not able to begin travel within one year of the award, the Managing Committee will award the prize to the designated runner-up.  He or she shall report experiences by one letter each month and by a summary report, presentation, and “evidence of scholarship” to be given prior to the awards dinner the following year.

HISTORY of the Competition:
The John Stewardson Memorial Competition in Architecture was founded after the tragic death of John Stewardson, a prolific designer and partner in the well-known Philadelphia firm of Cope & Stewardson. Following his funeral a collection was taken up by his fellow architects became a fund for a traveling fellowship for a young architect to study architecture abroad.
  Following tradition, the competition materials are kept sealed until 10 days prior to the submission the deadline when they are opened and each entrant works in a solo charette to complete the design and submit it back to the jury.
  Also in accordance with tradition the competition project is located within the State of Pennsylvania.

ELIGIBILITY:
1. Persons Expecting to graduate from professional studies at an accredited collegiate school of architecture in the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania leading to a degree in architecture the year of participation;
2. Alumni of one of the accredited colligate schools of architecture in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania who has graduated with a B.Arch within the past three (3) years and who is currently enrolled in an M. Arch program at an accredited collegiate school of architecture within the United States leading to a second professional degree the year of participation;
3. Alumni of one of the accredited collegiate schools of architecture in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania who has graduated with either a B.Arch or M.Arch within the past three (3) years and is actively working at an established and licensed architecture firm and pursuing their IDP requirements;
4. Alumni of an accredited collegiate school of architecture outside of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania who has graduated with either a B.Arch or M.Arch within the past three (3) years and is actively working for an architect established and licensed within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and who is actively pursuing their IDP requirements;
Those who have won the Scholarship or are licensed architects are not eligible.

ENTRY FEE
The entry fee is $125.00.

Registration by 5:00 pm on or before:      Monday, January   4, 2010
Competition Brief Issued at 12:00 pm on:  Tuesday, January 12, 2010
Competition Entry due by 3:00 pm on:    Thursday, January 21, 2010
Dates and times correspond to Eastern Standard Time
