The Summer Design Series is an opportunity for design-oriented individuals - especially students - to maintain and sharpen their drawing skills and creative abilities without breaking a sweat. We are offering 3 competitive selections on varied levels. You are welcome to participate in one, two or all three.
Series 1 - Chicago 39th Street Beach House
Series Overview:
Although not renown for its beaches, Chicagoans nevertheless take full advantage of their lakefront and available beach locations. These beaches have had their greatest concentration occurring to the north, the city has opened a new Southside location to serve many long excluded from such easily accessible amenities. To service these new patrons, a beach house will be needed.
Series Objective:
To design a beach house for Chicago’s new 39th Street beach
Series Parameters:
Final design should include ...
multiple views of the facility
dimensions
descriptions about its various functions
details explaining efforts to achieve a LEED rating
Site Facts:
3900 South in Burnham Park
covers 6.5 acres on the South Side
constructed using environment-friendly practices. The limestone blocks outlining the path are all reused from the previous site
a bio-retention area was built for the parking lot to avoid run off into the storm sewer and lake.

Series 2 - International Point of Interest Kiosk
Series Overview:
Often visitors arrive in an area and are unfamiliar with all that is available to explore and discover as a point of interest architecturally. Despite the growing use of street apps on smart phone devices, the vast majority of tourists and enthusiast still utilize maps and visitor centers. For these people, the presence of a kiosk designed to deliver information about nearby architectural styles, landmarks and opportunities as an independent device or one where a smartphone could be docked to download the information might be an extremely useful tool.
Series Objective:
To produce a series of drawings or views for a street-level kiosk to function as an information source or reference for the architecture in that particular area
Series Parameters:
Presentation for the kiosk should…
detail how it will function with reference to the features it might contain
feature touchscreen interaction
show each elevation with dimensions along with a perspective of the unit in place on the street
the internal or external incorporation of concession stands and restrooms

Series 3 - Streetscape Sketchers
Series Overview:
Recognizing the importance of freehand sketching in design professions, the aim here is to promote the continuing development and sharpening of this important discipline through competition.
Series Objective:
To produce a sketch drawing of a streetscape of your choosing. Subject can be foreign or domestic, urban or suburban, commercial or residential. Drawings should feature building structures, landscape, street amenities, cars and people
Series Parameters:
Submitted work to be completed without the use of mechanical, computer or any such devices which would deliver a quality of linework not consistent with freehand sketching.
Drawings must be perspectives.
Sketched can be black and white or color or a combination of both.
Subject must be a streetscape with a roadway and pedestrian throughway in view
