Ten months after the January 12, 2010 earthquake, approximately 2 Million Haitians are still without a permanent home. Even with the large outpouring of humanitarian aid towards Haiti, the transition from relief to reconstruction has been very slow. In an effort to unite those interested in supporting the Haitian communities, Haiti-Habitat, a subcommittee of the AIA NY Global Dialogues Committee, announces this Call for Collaborative Designs. Through this process, AIA NY GDC Haiti-Habitat will facilitate the creation of prototype vernacular housing to aid in rebuilding Haiti.
Haiti-Habitat's Call for Collaborative Designs will employ a three-step process:
STAGE ONE - DESIGN
The first stage involves the submission of design solutions for a sustainable home in Haiti.
STAGE TWO - CHARETTE
From the submissions 10 – 12 designers will be chosen for participation in a one-day charette when through collaborative effort between a panel of experts and the designers, six final schemes will be selected.
STAGE THREE - FUNDRAISING
The six finalists will be asked to further develop their designs for an exhibition and fundraising event to enable construction in Haiti.
