SUPERFRONT, a not-for-profit space for architectural experimentation and creative interdisciplinary exchange, invites artists and architects to propose a buildable project for 25 square inches of Detroit, located at 13949 Evergreen Rd | Detroit, MI 48223
A jury of architects, artists, and urbanists will select the winning proposal for construction. The winning proposal will be constructed with a budget of $125. The winner will also receive a prize of $100. The multi-disciplinary jury includes PAUL AMITAI: Program Manager + Curator, Eyebeam Art + Technology Center, ANDREA BAUZA HERNANDEZ: Architect, Puerto Rican Cultural Institute, CHRISTINA HEXIMER: Associate Director, Detroit Collaborative Design Center, JERRY PAFFENDORF: LOVELAND Co-Founder, and CRAIG L. WILKINS, PhD, AIA, ARA: Director, Detroit Community Design Center and Lecturer, Architecture & Urban Planning, University of Michigan.
Up to 3 honorable mention prizes of $50 will be awarded to runner-up candidates.
In partnership with LOVELAND micro real estate, SUPERFRONT has acquired 25 square inches of real property in Detroit, Michigan. For this micro-property, SUPERFRONT seeks proposals that may produce iterative effects. Proposals may explore connections between urban emptiness and nature reclaiming the city, renewal and anarchy, spatial versatility and human need, the shrinking city and the expanding virtual city, or other topics relevant to contemporary Detroit or our imagination of it.
Project documentation may include floor plans, urban plans, drawings, actions, lecture proposals -- any material that fits the 8.5” x 11” entry form and that may be constructed within the 5" x 5" square.
All proposals received digitally must be formatted for 8.5"x11" printing and must include the full-scale 5”x5” diagram as seen on the 1-page RFP entry form. The proposal page must include at least one 1-to-1 scale drawing, but may also include text, images, or any other relevant materials.

Once complete, please email your proposal to [email protected] by Tuesday November 30. Please include your full name (or firm name) and primary location, as well as the title of your proposal. By hard-copy, submit to SUPERFRONT BK, c/o Chloë Bass, 476 Jefferson Street #202, Brooklyn, NY 11237. If you request that materials be returned, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope. For consideration, all materials must be received by November 30th.
Physical models or additional materials (images, videos, etc) beyond the 1-page format will not be reviewed by the jury. However, additional materials may be submitted for consideration for general entry in the Detroit: A Brooklyn Case Study group exhibition at SUPERFRONT LA, curated by Mitch McEwen, Founder and Director of SUPERFRONT, and Chloë Bass, Director of SUPERFRONT Detroit. All complete submissions will be presented to the public in the upcoming SUPERFRONT LA exhibition Detroit: A Brooklyn Case Study. Detroit: A Brooklyn Case Study will open at SUPERFRONT LA at the Pacific Design Center in January 2011, and will be on view for 4 months. All physical submission materials remain the property of SUPERFRONT, unless and until reclaimed at SUPERFRONT LA, Pacific Design Center B208.
