I AM A SECOND RESPONDER / ARCHIVE Competition #2

Register/Submit Deadline:  Sunday, May 1, 20116:59 AMEDT

When disaster strikes, we are all aware of it immediately, as the media is quick to convey human suffering and chaos. But after initial attention subsides, the arduous efforts by people from and beyond the region through years of recovery go less noticed during a time when people are still vulnerable to public health and societal risk that can have permanent and transformative consequences. Architects and builders are part of the wave of second responders, workers who help communities re-establish and heal their internal social, economic, infrastructural and political structures after crisis. As the world has become more globally interconnected, architecture schools have embraced the challenge to examine both conceptual ideas and real conditions that can assist in this process.

Seeking Projects, Courses or Events
This competition is interested in second responder ideas from architecture students and faculty who have researched specific or general conditions of humanitarian recovery issues and created thoughtful ideas that could help people and communities prevent, mitigate, or recover from accidents or disasters. Topics might include Eastern Australia after the flooding, New Orleans after Katrina, Haiti after the earthquake or cholera, Southeast Asia after the tsunami, but it could also be Tanzania during the AIDS crisis, ideas for providing access for people with disabilities, or looking at how earthquake effect structures in southern California. Projects might be temporary or permanent housing, portable systems, community buildings, infrastructure, regional resource issues, or local markets -- systems at any scale that participate in human renewal.

Submission Guidelines
To submit, upload your topical project, course or event at ARCHIVE100.org and then simply add "Second Responder" as one of the Categories. (You may submit something already uploaded by just adding this Category listing.) Anything completed in the past four years in affiliation with a university or college by faculty or students is eligible. There is no entry fee. Entries must be posted by April 30, midnight EST. The more you upload, the better chance you have of being selected by a three member jury to win one of five $100 prizes along with a copy of Joan Ockman's forthcoming ACSA 100 book on architectural education, as well as being part of a special feature in the ARCHIVE exhibition opening in 2012.
