Type of procedure:
This is an international, open, single-level competition of ideas to obtain architectural design ideas.
Abstract:
The successful VIERTEL ZWEI [District Two] between Messe Wien and Praterstadion will be expanded over the next few years. This inner-city potential will now be used to create a new attractive and colourful city district, the VIERTEL ZWEI Plus [District Two Plus], in the Leopoldstadt district. The intention is to create a lively district for living and working, as a logical expansion of the successful office and working quarters, VIERTEL ZWEI: a district for students, families, creative minds, children and people to live in, who would like to enjoy the flair of one of the most beautiful areas of Vienna. The race track, which is rich in tradition and grandstands 2 + 3 of which are currently unused, is also part of this development area. These grandstands are therefore an essential part of the development of the newly expanded VIERTEL ZWEI Plus.
Assignment of tasks:
The grandstands of the Wiener Trabrennbahnverein are unique architectural constructions from the 1910s. The position, environment and the special architecture of the grandstands introduce us, as developers, to an exciting and demanding task of filling the grandstands with new life and making it come alive again. A monument can only reach its full potential if it is in use. This unique monument must be conserved in the long-run through modern redesign and development.
A utilisation concept for grandstands 2 + 3, which are both listed, must be prepared by the participants in the competition of ideas. In the course of a cooperative urban development procedure, a foundation for a rededication of the project areas has been negotiated.
In order to be able ensure a recovery and re-utilisation of the grandstand while in a dialogue with politicians and the Bundesdenkmalamt, additional areas to the north and south of grandstands 2 + 3 were made available which can be consulted for planning, as upstream areas for the design of a residential and/or office use with an urban style. In the cooperative urban development procedure, a suitable gross building area of 3000 m² was defined for the use of both grandstands. On the condition that the monument is also made accessible to the public, it is necessary to use at least 50% of the ground floor zone for public use, e.g. training, sports, games or co-working studios.
