Concept Competition for Urban Development in Berlin

Register/Submit Deadline:  Tuesday, Mar 11, 20086:55 AMEDT

Following the event week 7 Tage Innovation / 7 Days of Innovation, the Berlin University of the Arts, the Technical University Berlin, the WISTA MANAGEMENT GMBH, the operating company of the Science and Technology Park Adlershof and the Berlin Senate Dept. for Economics, Technology and WomenÂ’s Issues invited entries for a competition on location development on and around the Ernst-Reuter-Platz. The competition aims to create and to promote public awareness of the following topics:

  • Youth and Innovation
  • Emerging Culture and Creative Industries
  • Innovation in Science, Technology and Economy
  • Urban Development and Quality of Life
  • Communication and Visibility
Innovative developments within the Habitat Berlin-Charlottenburg are to be supported by the competition. Architects, urban and landscape planers, artists, designers, sociologists as well as members of other academic and scientific fields are invited to find answers to the following questions within their concepts:
  • How does public space become more attractive as a space of use for the inhabitants of a habitat? How can it be laid out as a space of communication between science, culture, industry and politics?
  • How can the Ernst-Reuter-Platz be connected with the neighbouring universities, the residential and commercial areas, the thoroughfares and roads, the Tiergarten (Berlin’s largest inner-city park) and the Spree (Berlin’s main river) on a planning as well as functional level?
  • How can the emergence of new forms of flexible and mobile work be accompanied and shaped?
  • How can the University of the Arts and the Technical University network in an active manner?
  • How can the development of the infrastructure within the city borough of Charlottenburg support networking between the universities and the research institutes on the one side with start-ups and international corporations on the other side?
  • How can the potential that can be found in knowledge, experiments and planning/designing within the habitat of Charlottenburg be made accessible to children and youth?

Invitations to submit entries to the competition are directed at agencies in the fields of architecture, urban development and planning as well as students in the disciplines of architecture, urban planning, landscape planning, art, design, visual communication, social and business communication as well as sociology. The submitted drafts and projects will be evaluated by an interdisciplinary jury. Drafts and projects that connect separate competition questions with each other will be especially taken into consideration. The eight best projects will be exhibited within the framework of the conference Innovation in Europe that will take place in April 2008. The three best projects will be awarded prize money to the tune of € 2500, € 1500 and € 1000. There is the possibility of receiving an allowance for expenses in the conceptual idea phase.
