Design for Lockwood

Register/Submit Deadline:  Saturday, Aug 16, 20086:55 AMEDT

Who is ASSA ABLOY Australia?

ASSA ABLOY is the company behind the iconic Australian lock brand Lockwood, well known for its premium commercial and residential products.

The company is a world leader, the most successful and innovative provider of door opening solutions, dedicated to satisfying end-user needs for security, safety and convenience.

With 150+ companies operating throughout the world, ASSA ABLOY has the strongest global presence in the lock and hardware industry offering a more complete product range than any other company in the market.

How will you enter 2020?

Imagine designing a door opening solution that could inspire and influence Lockwood’s future product range.

Lockwood, in partnership with the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA), offers a unique and exciting opportunity by challenging today’s architects and designers to transform the everyday humble locking device into a work of art which could revolutionalise the future.

The theme for 2008 is ‘How will you enter 2020?’ The entrant will need to anticipate building design trends in 2020, and create a complementary door opening solution.

A door opening solution is the system which allows access into or out of an opening. This may focus on a secure entry/exit, or internal door openings in a building.

The scope in 2008 has been broadened to include the whole ‘door opening solution’ rather than just a door handle. It is not about design and manufacturability for today, it is about innovative ideas for the future.

The entrant is free to design the complete system (e.g. door handle, closer, hinges), or just one component of the complete system (e.g. door handle). The system or component may be mechanical, electromechanical, electronic, etc.

Although there are no obligations for ASSA ABLOY Australia Pty Ltd to manufacture the designs, the company may use the Design to help influence future product development.

The Prize.

In addition to being titled the 2008 Design for Lockwood competition winner, the winning entrant will receive a travel voucher to the retail value of AUD$10,000.

Those who successfully reach the final shortlist will be invited to tour ASSA ABLOY’s manufacturing plant at Oakleigh, Victoria (home of Lockwood) and meet with members of the judging panel.

The Judging Criteria The judging panel will consist of the following people:

* 2 representatives from ASSA ABLOY Australia
* 1 representative from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects
* 1 practising architect

Submissions will be assessed on the following criteria:

# Originality
# Aesthetics
# Presentation of Design
# Relevance (how will the design fit within the Lockwood product range)
# Sustainability

The decision of the panel is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Timeframe.
