CANSTRUCTION MOVES TO THE WORLD FINANCIAL CENTER
Canstruction is excited to announce its move to the World Financial Center for its 16th annual design/build competition! arts>World Financial Center is co-presenting this year’s exhibit with the Society for Design Administration and the American Institute of Architects.
Forty of New York City’s top architectural and engineering firms will compete to see who can build the most incredible sculpture made entirely from full cans of food. At the close of the exhibit the structures will be dismantled and all of the canned food will be donated to City Harvest for distribution to emergency feeding programs. The public is invited to bring canned food to donate at the time of the exhibit.
Twenty-two of the sculptures will be located in the Winter Garden on view from November 20-December 2, 7am-11pm, and eighteen of the sculptures will be on view in the Courtyard Gallery, November 20-December 8, 9am-5pm (see this on Bustler events).
Unlike years past, the exhibit will be open the entire Thanksgiving weekend, making it the perfect holiday outing for family and friends. Whether a native New Yorker or a visitor to this great city, you won’t want to miss seeing these sculptures – the feats of engineering and colorful labels create a visual feast for the eyes!
The competing firms are thrilled to be at the World Financial Center during the Thanksgiving Holiday when it is fitting that we place a spotlight on Hunger to remind everyone that millions of Americans cannot afford to celebrate one of our nation’s most cherished holidays. The number of people relying on food pantries to bridge the gap to their next paycheck has increased dramatically over the past year. The pantries and soup kitchens have been forced to turn people away in record numbers because supply simply cannot keep pace with demand. With giant structures and moving mission statements, the Canstruction exhibit raises our level of awareness and moves viewers to take action.
Canstruction demonstrates that everyone CAN make a difference, one CAN at a time.
After touring the exhibit, the public is invited to walk across the street to the new Mercy Action Center, dedicated to ending world hunger. The Center opened in mid-October and has a wonderful exhibit and educational materials on what people can do to help end world hunger. Outside their front door walk just a few steps to take in the Irish Famine Memorial. It is a perfect outing for the entire family and a great way to educate young people on hunger and becoming part of the solution.
