About the awards
The WAN Education Award is a major international competition. If you have designed an educational facility, whether a school, university, college or academy that has been completed during the last three years, you can now enter for the 2009 awards
Judging criteria
The jury will judge entries on a number of factors including originality, innovation, form and special quality, sustainability and context, but the following two areas will carry the most weighting.
1. How your design addressed the key elements of the brief.
2. Specific examples of how your building has enhanced the education process.
Promotion
The WAN awards are gaining interest from local, national and international media around the world and last year’s House of the Year Award became the talking point of the global architectural community. A fact proved by the visitors to the WAN website which served over 3.6 million page impressions in one month alone
In addition, selected projects will be entered into our Featured Projects section, a weekly focus on educational buildings that will run during the awards to generate even more exposure for participants. Each week our editorial team will choose one project to feature in News Review.
Please be aware that if your project is chosen for this feature this does not automatically enter you through to the longlist of 25 buildings, this is a separate judging process.
Past winners have reported that the awards high profile and the publicity they received have contributed noticeably to their business success.
The competition stages
A long list of 25 entries will initially be selected after the closing date, further details of the project: plans, sections, elevations and more technical information will then be requested from these entrants. From the 25, a shortlist of six will be selected before an overall winner is chosen. The winning entry will receive £1,000 cash prize and an award plaque. The remaining five from the shortlist and any other schemes that the judges deem suitable will be listed as “commended”. All entries will be published on WAN and the winner and shortlisted entries will be featured in a special edition of News Review which reaches over 125,000 property developers, architects, consultants and organisations in 210 countries.
