A Railway in Vesuvius National Park

The subject of this design competition is a preliminary plan for the layout of the Vesuvius National Park railway, and related works, terminal stations, intermediate stops, park and ride car parks and off-site parking spaces.

Plans for the entire intended operation will be entrusted to the designer responsible for the preliminary project declared the winner. Said plans will be fundamental for the development of subsequent competition proceedings for choosing the concessionary to whom realization and management of the works is to be entrusted.

The preliminary project must also include the draft of an economic/financial study demonstrating the total or partial sustainability of the operation. The above-mentioned economic/financial study is to bring up to date the feasibility study named “Project for the Creation of an eco-sustainable mass transport system at the service of the Vesuvius National Park and connections between the whole area around Vesuvius and the coastal strip”, made by the municipality of S.Sebastiano in September 2001 according to CIPE decision 106/99 and contained in the “Infrastructural Archive” of the DVD “Back to the Top of the Twin-Peaked Volcano” which is an integral part of the Planning Guidelines.

The required updating must take into account the project hypotheses put forward, as well as those modifications that have come about over the last few years in the regional and local planning and programming framework.

We also wish to point out that the preliminary project must also include a project idea for the landscape-environmental and functional solution for the Ammendola-Formisano ex-quarry/dump as well as a recovery plan for the surrounding lands. This solution will be complementary to and separate from works outlined in the design competition and will not be part of the subsequent final project.
