The Royal Institute of British Architects’ Research and Development Department launched this new awards scheme in 2005 – the RIBA President’s Awards for Research – to reward and encourage outstanding research in architecture carried out by PhD students, academics and practitioners.
The awards help to promote and champion high-quality research and encourage its dissemination and incorporation into the knowledge base of the profession. They contribute to raising the profile of architects, practitioners and academics engaged in outstanding research, and raise awareness of the need for research across the profession to foster innovation and strategic thinking.
There are three awards:
RIBA President’s Award for Research - Outstanding PhD Thesis
Annual award for the best PhD Thesis from any school of architecture in which the department has a course validated by the RIBA. There is no limit on entries per school.
RIBA President’s Award for Research - Outstanding University-located Research
Annual award for the best completed university-located research project carried out in any school of architecture in which the department has a course validated by the RIBA. There is no limit on entries per school.
RIBA President’s Award for Research - Outstanding Professional Practice-located Research
Annual award for the best completed professional practice-located research project initiated by an RIBA member and/or RIBA Chartered Practice.
Assessment will be undertaken by a judging panel appointed by the Research and Development Committee and approved by the President. It is composed of practitioners and academics, and may or may not include members of that committee.
As well as a certificate and a citation from the President there will be the opportunity to feature the winning research under each category in the RIBA Journal. The judges may also award commendations to one or more other shortlisted submissions in each category. There is no entrance fee for submissions.
Sunand Prasad, President of the RIBA, said: “Knowledge is any profession’s most precious asset. Research is what underpins knowledge, keeps it sharp and helps our anticipation of the future. Through these awards the RIBA recognises both excellence in research and the capacity of research to unite the study and practice of architecture; to strengthen links between students and the profession.”
