Envisioning the Future of Shopping

From its earliest days designers of shopping centers have always taken the concept of what a shopping center is and what it could be to a different level. Who would have ever thought that from a simple line of outwardly facing stores would evolve into multi-level, multi-use mixed-use projects that are emulated around the world? Or how a simple concept of two competing department stores pared with specialty stores would flourish into shopping centers encompassing millions of square feet with a cross section of retailers under one roof? Shopping center visionaries – that’s who.

Whether these visionaries are architects, shopping center designers, owners, developers, they are individuals who have dared to dream and have made our industry one of the most dynamic and innovative in the world.

We now invite you to dare to dream and envision what the architectural innovations of the shopping center of the future will be in 2029 to 2059 through the International Council of Shopping Centers, Inc. (ICSC) ‘Future Image’ Architecture Competition.

The ICSC ‘Future Image’ Architecture Competition allows you to envision the shopping environment of the future which will inspire and entertain the retail real estate industry with out-of-the-box, innovative ideas that will progress our current understanding of the shopping experience. Ideas are not limited to design and architecture but may include any aspect—specific or general—of the retail continuum. Awards will be presented for the following concepts: The Mall Environment; The Shopping Experience; The Merchandise Mix; Dining and Entertainment; Parking and Transit; Green; and General Brilliance and Innovation.

The ICSC ‘Future Image’ Architecture Competition is open to all architecture professionals worldwide, who are members of ICSC. All submissions will be exhibited in the Future Image Gallery during ICSC’s RECon, May 17-20, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Winners will be announced and awards presented on Tuesday, May 19 and featured in an article in ICSC’s Shopping Centers Today.
