Volcanic Architecture Iceland

Register/Submit Deadline:  Monday, Sep 23, 202411:59 PMBST

For those who experience vision loss, it can be easy to retreat from the world, to stay indoors and avoid unpredictable surroundings.

This is an opportunity to explore your creativity and challenge your design skills to conceive an architectural marvel that will provide a safe, pleasant experience to provide a sensory journey and connect people experiencing vision loss to the dramatic surroundings of the black beaches of Iceland.

Look into the future now.

Retreat for the Blind Iceland

Challenge: to design a partly subterranean retreat to connect people with visual impairments with the sensory environment of Reynisfjara Beach, Iceland.

Our brief asks for an innovative and creative design focusing on the user experience and connection to the surrounding nature and wildlife with a minimal environmental impact. The partly subterranean structure will give blind and visually impaired people a unique experience with sensory adventures and opportunity to relax and feel at peace. The retreat should be connected to the surroundings through the choice of design and materiality.

Spa and Art facilities will make use of the natural amenities this site has to offer with thermal and glacial waters, ice, black rock and sand.

This project will be accompanied by a written description of the journey through your proposal which can be enjoyed by blind and visually impaired people.

Volcanic Visitor Centre

Challenge: to design a centre where both tourists and guests of the retreat can enjoy a meal and a sensory day together in this fantastic location.

Our Visitor centre and Retreat for the Blind ask for a unique, dynamic piece of architecture that provides a tactile and sensory journey for those who are visually impaired.

The incredible location and dramatic characteristics of the site should be evident throughout, taking advantage of the geothermal properties of the area, including the heated water supply, and the fresh glacial drinking water.

The spectacular views of the area should be considered and should play a role in the in the design as not all the visitors will be completely without sight.

All projects will be published and promoted across our global platforms.
