OFFICIAL STATEMENT
The health crisis that forced us in March to reschedule the MEXTRÓPOLI Festival for September, months later, places us before an equally critical panorama. In Latin America, and specifically in Mexico, the numbers of infections continue to rise and the panorama does not present us with a close solution to the problem. This is why we have decided to move, once again, the Festival's face-to-face activities to March 2021, hoping by then we will have a safer setting that allows us to enjoy the activities already scheduled, and some that may be added by then.
However, MEXTRÓPOLI is not postponed, it is transformed to continue building culture from architecture and the city. Therefore, on September 7, we will hold MEXTRÓPOLI # EnLínea, a 5-hour digital marathon that unites great institutions, artists, architects, creators and scientists.
The exhibitions will adhere to the opening calendars of the museums or cultural centers that host them. We will be sharing these dates.
MEXTRÓPOLI # EnLínea is a digital marathon of more than five hours, which unites institutions, artists, architects, creators and scientists. Different voices will take place through conferences, conversations, interviews and various formats that will allow us to put our initial question on the table, how to think about the possibility of an (un) sustainable city today, when the new conditions imposed by the pandemic and the accompanying climate, economic, social and political crisis?
----
The celebration of an international festival meets the objectives of expanding the coverage and cultural and citizen use of the public space of cities, promoting in the community the exercise of their creative, critical and participation capacity, based on knowledge and interaction with experiences from different parts of the world that turn their eyes to our metropolis, so that it, in turn, returns it, generating an enriching dialogue. For four days, Mexico City becomes a powerful cultural, tourist and citizen attraction, positioning the capital of the country at the head of initiatives that are committed to the generation of new spaces for interaction open to citizens that encourage the construction of urban culture.
Each year MEXTRÓPOLI focuses on different aspects that seek to put on the table the most important themes of architecture and city, for our next edition the theme will be: MEXTRÓPOLI 2020: (UN)SUSTAINABLE CITY

For its 2020 edition, MEXTRÓPOLI will have the presence of:
- Architect Wang Shu, awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2012, and his associate, architect Lu Wenyu. The study builds a critical vision towards the architecture profession, in regards to the demolition and destruction of large urban areas. At the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2006, they presented the piece Tiled Garden, an installation made of 66'000 recycled tiles that were rescued from demolition sites. With this gesture, the study called Amateur Architecture Studio, expressed their views on the demolitions and reuse of building materials.
- Architect, urban planner, theoretician and pedagogue Moshe Safdie. Of Israeli-Canadian origin, Safdie has explored the essential principles of socially responsible design with a different visual language. Safdie graduated from McGill University. In 1964 he established his own firm to perform Habitat’67, an adaptation of his undergraduate thesis and a turning point in modern architecture. The project promoted the design and implementation of three-dimensional prefabricated housing units.
- Mexican architect Frida Escobedo, founder and director of her own architecture and design studio based in Mexico City. The work carried out in Frida Escobedo's studio covers art installations and furniture design to residential and public buildings. Some of his ephemeral interventions are the Pavilion Eco 2010 or the Serpentine Pavillion 2018, in addition to La Tallera in Cuernavaca, one of the museums with one of the most innovative architectures of recent years.
- Manuela Carmena was major of Madrid in the period from 2015 to 2019. In addition, she was a member of the General Council of the Judiciary between 1996 and 2001. During her administration, an environmental and pedestrianization initiative was launched that privileged the presence of the citizen over that of the car.
