Architecture Can Heal: Adapting Healthcare Spaces in Response to COVID-19

Tuesday, May 12, 20203 PM - 4 PMEDT

Online Event | Click here to attend and/or register

As the U.S. and global governments work to slow the spread of COVID-19, one thing that’s become very clear is just how much the physical space around us is a key part of the response and mitigation efforts. To explore this issue further, leading architecture firm, MASS Design Group, recently launched a COVID-19 design response team to explore design’s role in mitigating COVID-19.

Part of MASS’s campaign has involved bringing together experts from a variety of fields to design better spaces “on-the-fly” to treat COVID-19 patients and keep staff, family members, and our communities safe. Next week, MASS Design Group will be hosting a virtual roundtable to discuss the ways that healthcare spaces need to adapt to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The virtual roundtable will be an hour-long discussion between top doctors, designers and researchers involved in COVID-19-related projects in New York and Boston – two cities that have been epicenters during the pandemic. With panelists from The Mount Sinai Hospital, Boston Medical Center, Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, and MASS Design Group, the roundtable will be moderated by Harvard Medical School assistant professor and director at Ariadne Labs Dr. Neel Shah. You can read the case studies from MASS Design Group that emerged from these partnerships about makeshift facilities and Mount Sinai ICU spaces.

Who:

  • Neel Shah, MD, MPP, Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School, and Director of Delivery Decisions Initiative at Ariadne Labs (Moderator)
  • Michael Murphy, Founding Principal and Executive Director, MASS Design Group
  • Jessie M. Gaeta, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine; CMO Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program
  • Joshua Barocas, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine; Infectious Diseases physician, Boston Medical Center
  • John Bucuvalas, MD, Vice-Chair of Faculty Affairs and Professor of Pediatrics, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Mount Sinai Kravis Children's Hospital
