20 Years of the Rose Fellowship - Design with Love: At Home in America Book Launch and Panel

Design with Love: At Home in America is a collection of stories and documentary photographs that show how architecture is about human relationships and shared ambitions, and how buildings can support and embody them.

Join Enterprise Community Partners in an intimate conversation to virtually celebrate the book's launch. Author Katie Swenson, MASS Design Group Senior Principal and former Enterprise Community Partners SVP, will be joined by long-time supporter of the Enterprise Rose Fellowship and champion for community-led design, Maurice Cox, Commissioner of the Department of Planning and Development for the City of Chicago, and some of the inspiring people whose personal stories are shared within the book's pages and pictures.

Design with Love: At Home in America is an essay and photo book featuring the work of Rose Fellows from 2000 to the present by Swenson, the former Enterprise design & sustainability vice president, Rose Fellowship director, and a 2001-2004 Rose Fellow. With photography by Harry Connolly, the book is a photojournalist dream and coffee table book documenting partnerships and innovations in design across the U.S. led by some of the most talented social entrepreneurs, architects, and community planners in the country. 

The book captures the lessons of 20 years of community-based development to create beautiful, well-designed affordable housing for some of America’s most vulnerable communities, from the streets of Skid Row in Los Angeles to disinvested blocks of West Baltimore. These hopeful stories and photographs show how designers, social activists, and community members have worked together to improve justice and equity — even in the direst of circumstances of inequality, racism, and neglect. Founded in 2000 by Frederick P. Rose, the Enterprise Rose Fellowship is a two-year partnership between Enterprise Community Partners, design fellows, and community partners that provides community design solutions in affordable housing and community development. The book serves as a tribute to what’s possible in communities, an inspirational read for all urban planners, designers, and policymakers who are looking for creative and affordable housing in communities, and for all who want to revel in the diversity of the American landscape and its people. The work is the foundation for Swenson’s work leading affordable housing initiatives across the country as a senior principal at MASS Design Group, a position she assumed on Feb. 1, 2020.
