20 Years of the Rose Fellowship - Design with Love: At Home in America Book Launch and Panel

Thursday, Oct 1, 20204:30 PM - 6 PMEDT

Online Event | Click here to attend and/or register

Design with Love: At Home in America is a collection of stories and documentary photographs that show how architecture is about human relationships and shared ambitions, and how buildings can support and embody them.

Join Enterprise Community Partners in an intimate conversation to virtually celebrate the book's launch. Author Katie Swenson, MASS Design Group Senior Principal and former Enterprise Community Partners SVP, will be joined by long-time supporter of the Enterprise Rose Fellowship and champion for community-led design, Maurice Cox, Commissioner of the Department of Planning and Development for the City of Chicago, and some of the inspiring people whose personal stories are shared within the book's pages and pictures.

The first 50 people to register will receive a complimentary copy of the book.

More about the Book:

Design with Love: At Home in America is an essay and photo book featuring the work of Rose Fellows from 2000 to the present by Swenson, the former Enterprise design & sustainability vice president, Rose Fellowship director, and a 2001-2004 Rose Fellow. With photography by Harry Connolly, the book is a photojournalist dream and coffee table book documenting partnerships and innovations in design across the U.S. led by some of the most talented social entrepreneurs, architects, and community planners in the country.

The book captures the lessons of 20 years of community-based development to create beautiful, well-designed affordable housing for some of America’s most vulnerable communities, from the streets of Skid Row in Los Angeles to disinvested blocks of West Baltimore. These hopeful stories and photographs show how designers, social activists, and community members have worked together to improve justice and equity — even in the direst of circumstances of inequality, racism, and neglect. Work captured in the book includes:

  • David Flores, Casa Familiar, San Ysidro, CA

  • Nicholas Forest, Quest Community Development, Atlanta, GA

  • Kaziah Haviland, Thunder Valley CDC, Porcupine, SD

  • Theresa Hwang, Skid Row Housing Trust, Los Angeles, CA

  • Nathan Poel, Office of Rural and Farmworker Housing, Yakima, WA

  • Ceara O’Leary, Detroit Collaborative Design Center, Detroit, MI

  • Joann Ware, InterIm CDA, Seattle, WA

  • Emily Roush-Elliott, Greenwood-Leflore Economic Development Corporation, Greenwood, MS

  • Joseph Kunkel, Santo Domingo Housing Authority and Sustainable Native Communities Collaborative, Santo Domingo, NM

  • Daniel Greenspan, Community Works and Unity Properties at Bon Secours Hospital, Baltimore, MD

Founded in 2000 by Frederick P. Rose, the Enterprise Rose Fellowship is a two-year partnership between Enterprise Community Partners, design fellows, and community partners that provides community design solutions in affordable housing and community development. The book serves as a tribute to what’s possible in communities, an inspirational read for all urban planners, designers, and policymakers who are looking for creative and affordable housing in communities, and for all who want to revel in the diversity of the American landscape and its people. The work is the foundation for Swenson’s work leading affordable housing initiatives across the country as a senior principal at MASS Design Group, a position she assumed on Feb. 1, 2020.

Proceeds from the book benefit the Rose Fellowship.

REVIEWS // WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT DESIGN WITH LOVE

"Design with Love demonstrates how these young design visionaries are helping to amplify the beating hearts of communities, spaces that bring safety, health, beauty, joy and comfort to families."

Diane Ives, Fund Advisor, Kendeda Fund

"Dr. Cornel West teaches us that 'Justice is what love looks like in public.' Design with Love: At Home in America shows us what that looks like in built form. Every designer who strives to make the world a better place will find comfort and wisdom in these pages."

Eric J. Cesal, Director of the Sustainable Environmental Design Major Program, UC Berkeley, College of Environmental Design

“In this remarkable book, Katie Swenson traces the experiences of ten former Rose Fellows as they navigate the daunting, complex, and often unfamiliar world of affordable housing. How refreshing, in a period marked by such spectacle and strife, to focus on something as timeless, fundamental and essential as love.”

David Gamble, AIA AICP, co-author Rebuilding the American City
