Warming Huts: a decade + of art and architecture on ice

Warming Huts: a decade + of art and architecture on ice

Join us for the virtual launch of Warming Huts: a decade + of art and architecture on ice (Dalhousie Architectural Press).

The Warming Huts are public art and architecture installations that have adorned the wintertime rivers of Winnipeg since 2010. Selected annually through an international design competition, and via the invitation of select designers or artists, the huts contribute to the cultural and social vitality of the city in our coldest – but warmest-hearted – season.

This book has been published to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the design competition. It celebrates and discusses the annual project as a critical body of work foregrounding the poetics and politics of public space, while highlighting the variety of architectural narratives expressed in the Huts. The book also includes a comparative analysis of the more than one thousand entries to the design competition, and maps the origins of the huts from around the world.

Contributors include journalist and professor Niigaan Sinclair, urbanist Hazel Borys, and architectural critic Lisa Rochon. Past-President of the RAIC Michael Cox and Senator Patricia Bovey provide forwards, with an introduction by Christine Macy, Chair of Dalhousie Architectural Press. The launch will be attended by the book’s editors: Lawrence Bird – architect and planner; Peter Hargraves – whose firm Sputnik Architecture conceived the Warming Huts; and Sharon Wohl – professor of architecture and urbanism at Iowa State University. They will present an overview of the Warming Huts, the book and its development.

There is an upcoming book launch on Friday May 28th, at 7:00 pm CDT (WPG)

Registration is required to directly participate in the Zoom webinar. It will be simultaneously streamed on YouTube and available for viewing thereafter.
