Lectures are delivered from September '21 to May '22, and feature provocative speakers who examine the latest ideas in architecture, regional and urban planning, and landscape architecture. The lectures challenge attendees to broaden their thinking on a myriad of issues related to design. Design Matters engages students, public officials, industry professionals and interested citizens — people who want to learn, understand and address design issues affecting our community.
The lectures spark conversations about societal issues by engaging with innovative thinkers. Attendees are encouraged to recognize the important role design plays in our daily lives.
Join industry professionals, faculty, students, alumni and people in the community who care about design and building a great city at an upcoming lecture!
Design Matters with Harriet Harriss, Pratt Institute “Architects After Architecture”
What can you do with a doctoral degree in architecture? Where might it take you? What kind of challenges could you address? Architects After Architecture reframes architecture as a uniquely versatile way of acting on the world, far beyond that of designing buildings. The book features 40 practitioners who have used their architectural training in new and resourceful ways to tackle the climate crisis, work with refugees, advocate for diversity, start tech companies, become leading museum curators, tackle homelessness, draft public policy, become developers, design video games, shape public discourse, and much more. Dr. Harriet Harriss - Dean of Pratt Institute School of Architecture - will introduce this award-winning volume and discuss how the various contributions describe a future of architecture that is diverse and engaged, expanding the limits of the discipline, and offering new paths forward in times of crisis.
