The Genius of the Place: The Life and Work of Geoffrey Bawa

Join Studio One Eleven in collaboration with the LA Design Festival’s Docos on Design Series at the Downtown Long Beach ArtWalk for an exclusive screening of the 2023 film celebrating the legendary Sri Lankan architect, Geoffrey Bawa. Directed by Afdhel Aziz and co-created by Paul Vu, this film offers an intimate exploration of Bawa’s iconic works, highlighting his profound influence on modern architecture in South Asia.

Geoffrey Bawa’s architectural legacy comes to life in this captivating documentary, which delves into five of his most notable projects. From ocean fortresses to jungle palaces, each location reflects Bawa’s ability to harness “the genius of the place” as a source of inspiration. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion led by Studio One Eleven Urban Design Director Shruti Shankar, featuring co-director and editor Paul Vu and architect, Gerhard Mayer, who worked with Bawa in his early career.
