Before the Great Fire of London in 1666, there were 111 churches in the City of London. Not all of the 81 destroyed in the fire were rebuilt and of those that were a number were subsequently demolished when they became surplus to requirements as the City’s residential population declined in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The Blitz of the 1940s took its toll on those that remained.
