Nicholas Adams, author of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill: SOM since 1936, will spotlight projects from over seven decades of the firm’s international work, beginning with some of the little-known World War II and post -War projects. Adams will then moderate a discussion with past SOM chairman John Winkler and current partner Mustafa K. Abadan examining the changing relationship between practice abroad and practice at home. This program is the first of three evenings the League will present to consider the intersection of contemporary architectural practice and globalization. Nicholas Adams is the Mary Conover Mellon Professor in the History of Architecture at Vassar College. Adams serves on the editorial board of the Italian architectural magazine Casabella, where he is a frequent contributor. His articles on contemporary architecture have appeared in magazines such as Architectural Record, Arkitektur (the Swedish Review of Architecture), and Building Design (London). John H. Winkler was associated with SOM for 30 years, as a partner for 20 years and as chairman of the firm for four years prior to his retirement in 1999. His direct foreign work experience includes projects in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, as well as project oversight in Europe, South America, and Pakistan. Mustafa K. Abadan joined SOM New York in 1983 and became a design partner in 1996. He has worked both in the New York and London offices, and practices architecture worldwide. His work includes projects in South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Egypt, Abu Dhabi, Germany, Brazil, and Chile. Tickets are required for admission to League programs.
