thejamjar invites you to the opening of Anchored Ocean in the presence of the artist Subodh Kerkar on Wednesday 29 April 2009 from 7pm onwards at thejamjar. Indian artist Subodh Kerkar returns to Dubai with his latest body of works titled Anchored Ocean. Through temporary installations on the beaches of Goa he captures ephemeral poems on the sand, which he then photographs, freezing them in print. Kekar famously creates temporary installations on the beach using shells, sand, light, and boats. In this new body of work he uses the fishermen themselves, exploring their lives and their unity with the ocean. “The ocean is their life itself. For fisherman, the waves just don’t rise and fall ….. For him, the ocean breathes. The ocean is the very breath of his life!†– Subodh Kerkar Indian philosophy talks about the unity of ‘Atma and Parmatma’; of man and God. In reference to this Kerkar comments, “I find the lives of fishermen inseparably connected with the sea; lives anchored on the seashore. For them the ocean is a friend, a companion, a teacher, an adversary, the giver ….. all in one.†“My installations erase the boundaries between the creator and the created, the fisherman and the fish, the boat and the boatman ….. using the magic wand of art.†- Subodh Kerkar Location: St. 17a, Behind Dubai Garden Centre, Al Quoz 3, Dubai T: 971 4 3417303 E: [email protected]
