FOR FIVE AND A HALF DECADES, I.D. has chosen and cataloged the year’s best design in the Annual Design Review. Our expert judges sort through hundreds of entries, looking for designs that stop them in their tracks—items that astonish with their beauty, utility, and innovation. This year, with the economy dominating the headlines, jurors struggled to balance their emotional reactions to good looks with practical assessments of design and cost. Some pieces, despite hefty price tags, won because of their undeniable charm, while other winners stood out with their combination of strong concepts and good value. On the following pages, you’ll find fresh interpretations of well-known brands (Coca-Cola’s new bottles); hot designs from young talents (Shelly Shelly’s Loft chair); and innovative offerings from around the world that wowed our judges. Want to see this year’s winners for yourself? Starting June 15, stop by Material ConneXion’s showroom in New York City for the Annual Design Review exhibit. Material ConneXion is a global design consultancy whose scientists and business strategists help companies match their products with high-tech, sustainable, and cutting-edge materials. They hosted some of this year’s juries in their New York space, and it’s the perfect spot to showcase our winners. Annual Design Review Exhibit June 25 – August 21 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday ------------ Material ConneXion 60 Madison Avenue, 2nd floor New York, NY 10010 (212) 842-2050 materialconnexion.com Since 1954, the Annual Design Review has recognized the best in product, furniture, graphic, and environment design, from the iconic to the obscure. Throughout the years, this annual showcase has chronicled the evolution of design, and highlighted its impact on our material and visual culture. Each year, the featured work is chosen by a jury of leading practitioners, who, along with I.D.'s editorial team, focus the abundance of submissions into a clear survey of the state of design. The resulting overview is published in the July/August issue of I.D. magazine — the Annual Design Review issue. http://www.id-mag.com/annualdesignreview/
