ContextContrast: New Architecture in Historic Districts, 1967-2009

Wednesday, Oct 7, 20091 AM — Sunday, Jan 24, 20101 AMEDT

New York, NY | New York, NY

The Center for Architecture (536 LaGuardia Place, NYC) is proud to present ContextContrast: New Architecture in Historic Districts, 1967-2009. New York is often imagined as a perennially new city, yet in the four decades since the 1965 passage of the New York Landmarks Law, it has become one of the strongest forces for historic preservation in the country. Context/Contrast asks how the Commission’s charge of ensuring “appropriate” new architecture in historic districts has allowed neighborhoods to evolve without endangering the essential character that contributes to their public value and makes them worth protecting. Exhibition curator: Rachel Carley Exhibition design: Moorhead & Moorhead Graphic design: PS New York Photography: Elizabeth Felicella Exhibition and related programs are organized by the AIA New York Chapter, the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission, and the Center for Architecture Foundation in partnership with the New York Landmarks Preservation Foundation. For more information: http://cfa.aiany.org/index.php?section=upcoming&expid=89 The exhibition opens with a public reception on Tuesday, October 6, from 6-8 pm. This opening organized by the Center for Architecture and is a part of Architecture Week 2009. For a complete list of Architecture Week events please visit: aiany.org/architectureweek.
