With heightened concern about the use of natural resources, materials for buildings are once again at the forefront of discussion. Holzman Moss Architecture strives to take advantage of the variety of products available, whether time tested, tired from over-use, relegated to the scrap pile, entirely new or from allied fields. Malcolm Holzman will provide illustrated examples of Holzman Moss Architecture’s adventures in researching and applying materials to make memorable architecture, including a number of the firm’s civic and academic projects throughout the country. Malcolm Holzman has been fascinated with and drawn towards materials throughout his professional life, from his early partnership in Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Architects to his current practice with Holzman Moss Architects. Many of his over 120 completed buildings exhibit innovative and surprising applications of glazed tile, glass, metal, wood, and clay recycled, appropriated, reinterpreted or rescued outright from the “spoil pile†or “bone yard" along with a wide assortment of unconventional materials ranging from abandoned subway kiosks to cattle trailer panels.
