03 July 2008 - 06 September 2008 All day Venue: Gallery 1 Description: This exhibition addresses China's absence in written histories of Modernism, examining for the first time the country's extraordinary architectural development during the early 20th century. This timely exhibition, given the parallels of rapid development that the country is currently undergoing, investigates the role of Modernism, interpreted through distinctive geographical, cultural, historical and political circumstances, in shaping China's architectural and urban landscapes. The exhibition coincides with the publication of the book 'Modernism in China' (Wiley, June 2008). Both exhibition and book are co-curated and co-authored by Edward Denison and Guang Yu Ren, authors of 'Building Shanghai – the Story of China's Gateway' (Wiley, 2006) and 'Asmara – Africa's Secret Modernist City' (Merrell 2003 & 2007). They are produced in collaboration with the World Monuments Fund Britain and the British Consulate-General, Shanghai. Fees: Free admission Contact: RIBA Programmes 020 7580 5533 Organiser: RIBA
